Ubi maior minor cessat or rather “ubi minor maior cessat”? The Italian and Scandinavian coming-of-age literature between 1870 and 1914 permits the analysis of the category of “minors” and their relationship with “majors” according to three perspectives proposed in this study: the historical and political question of nation forming, the feminine cause in the social context and the childhood situation in educational debates. The prism of an immature hero and heroine as protagonists of these Bildung-fictions proposes a new approach to the comparison of two distinct cultural spaces through different literary genres: the coming-of-age novel, the coming-of-age drama, the novel of self-training and the literature for coming-of-age. The socio-political and historical context of Scandinavia and Italy at the turn of the twentieth century is taken into account in the analysis, as well as the international networks of intellectuals and authors who gave birth to this new literary figure as a metaphor for the stakes of modernity.
